Sandy’s Gaming at Camp Landing turned two years old this week. We can well remember covering the initial meeting at Boyd County Courthouse in which Revolutionary Racing gave its pitch for the race track and casino.
We’ve covered many meetings in which promises were made but not kept.
The exact opposite is true about Sandy’s Gaming and Racing.
They’ve kept their promise to provide quality gaming and soon racing at their facility. This week, they announced their racing schedule starting in 2026.
The mall in Cannonsburg seemed to be dying a slow death prior to the opening of Malibu Jack’s and Sandy’s. We’ve found that some folks don’t go there to gamble but to eat and watch a sporting event on their huge screens.
Under roof at Sandy’s is a 74,000-square-foot casino, sportsbook betting and a restaurant. They have more than 700 slot machines to try your luck. If you’re unsure or bashful about how to use a slot machine or place a sports bet, their employees will be glad to show you. Of course, they won’t tell you which team to bet on, but they’ll explain betting odds and how it works.
Sandy’s, like most reputable casinos, discourages problem gamblers. They have signage posted throughout the facility on how to avoid problem gambling. It is the best interest of a casino not to have big losers who don’t return or have a good time. If you think you’re going to win big on every betting session, you’re not. The best approach is to set a budget for gaming before you enter a casino.
Revolutionary Racing has been developing their race track behind the facility. Both Camp Landing and the race track are built on former golf courses. Camp Landing was Cedar Knoll and the race track will be on former Twin Valley Gold Course.
Quarter horse racing is somewhere between 330 to 1,000 yards. Unlike the Kentucky Derby, which last two minutes, quarter horse racing is sometimes as short as 30 seconds. It is a sprint among participating horses and jockeys. It’s catching on around the country.
On any day, you can bet on horse racing or sports inside the casino. You don’t have to bet a dime if you just want to watch. Sandy’s developed a loyalty program that increases your chances of winning big prizes such as new cars.
We’re impressed they kept their promises. After locals were scammed by Braidy Industries, many thought this might be another future broken promise. Not so.
Sandy’s and its employees make donations to various nonprofits and educational programs in our region.
Sandy’s bring folks from out of town daily and on weekends. Just look at the license plates in their vast parking lot. We’re glad to have visitors in our area. We’re lucky to have Sandy’s.
They’re likely to have a successful horse racing season, too. That’s a safe bet.
